Get Ready to Grow: Community Garden Support Program Applications Now Available
Funding applications for the 2021-22 Community Garden Support Program are now available to help eligible municipalities and community groups establish and enhance new and existing community gardens. There is no deadline to apply, but applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
As part of the $2.25-million Provincial Agrifoods Assistance Program, the Provincial Government will invest $100,000 into non-repayable grants under the Community Garden Support Program. Last year the program funded 124 projects to help establish 39 new community gardens and enhance 85 existing community gardens, compared to 101 projects in 2019. This year, the maximum available grant will increase from $500 to $750.
The Community Garden Support Program was established in 2019 to increase:
· Food self-sufficiency;
· Access to fresh foods;
· Consumption of fruits and vegetables; and
· Awareness and appreciation of the importance of local food production and the agriculture sector.
Nearly 6,000 people participated in, and benefited from, this program in 2020, including youth, seniors, and Indigenous groups. In 2019, 3,500 participants were involved in the program.
